Update on jewellers robbery

Two men have appeared in court today suspected on the robbery of Bond Jewellers in Huntriss Row.

The robbery occurred on Saturday afternoon and robbed the store of three Rolex watches and a Diafuego watch to the value to £14,000.

Leon Gareth Littlechild, 39, of Rowan Close, appeared at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court in custody.

It is alleged that the defendant robbed the store of three Rolex watches and a Diafuego watch to the value to £14,000.

He also faced an allegation of possessing an offensive weapon, namely a crowbar, in a public place.

Following the incident on Saturday, two men were apprehended by police and taken into custody.

Littlchild was charged and another man, aged 42, was questioned and released without further action.

The suspect was tracked though town by police with the help of CCTV cameras.

He was arrested just 16 minutes after the initial 999 call was received. Property has been recovered by the police, including a number of watches.

Scarborough Athletic 5 Nostell Miners Welfare 0

Scarborough Athletic remain top of the NCEL Premier Division with a comfortable win over Nostell Miners Welfare.

The Welfare failed to deal with Denny Ingram’s long throw-in from the right and when the ball landed at the feet of Ryan Blott just a couple of yards from goal, Athletic’s top scorer made no mistake.

A sweeping crossfield move saw the ball switched from right to left into the path of Paddy Miller who made the most of the space afforded to him, powering towards the corner of the Nostell area before smashing the ball across Denton and into the back of the visitors’ net.

Funk was forced to shuffle his pack with James Bennett entering the fray to replace Matty Plummer who limped off with a thigh problem, but the re-organisation didn’t seem to affect Athletic as they made it 3-0 half way through the first period.

Mitchell Pearson took far too long in attempting to clear Paddy Miller’s cross from the left and Jimmy Beadle nipped in to steal the ball and plant it past Denton for his sixth goal in his last six outings.

All this happened within the first half.

Athletic’s fourth arrived just seven minutes into the second half when Tony Hackworth’s clever diagonal pass released Hawkes who pulled the ball back across the face of goal for Bennett who could not miss from barely a yard out.

The hosts began to create more chances as the game became stretched and Hawkes fired narrowly over before Hackworth eventually notched the fifth of the afternoon in the 74th minute.

Athlectic have now scored an impressive 34 goals in their last seven home NCEL fixtures, a run of victories in which they have conceded just three times.

Local busker is jailed for three years.

The town’s regular busker ‘Billy the Busker’ has been sentenced by crown court last week after being described as a ‘prolific offender’.

William ‘Billy’ Farrell, 63, has 54 convictions for 105 offences, committed since 1963, was sentenced by a jury at York Crown Court of breaking into the basement of a Scarborough house and assault with intent to resist his apprehension by the householder.

The incident goes back to April 17 of last year when Farrell was confronted by householder Anthony Gibbon after he heard noises coming from the basement of his Queen Street home.

Mr Gibbon investigated to find that Farrell was inside the cellar, piling up bags of hand tools and other items ready for removal, and challenged him.

Attempts by Mr Gibbon to the intruder at the scene failed, only resulting in a bout of pushing and scuffling, but Farrell was recognised by neighbours and witnesses alerted by the commotion as “Billy the Busker”.

Passing sentence, the Recorder of York, Judge Stephen Ashurst, told Farrell that he was “not persuaded that he was a harmless eccentric, but remained a prolific offender”.

Construction was meant to start in August 2012 but due to money problems nothing has been started, causing people to demand answers about the proposed community stadium and leisure facilities.

Scarborough has been without a football stadium since McCains Stadium was demolished back in 2011 after Scarborough FC went into liquidation with debts of £2.5million in 2007, ending the clubs 128-year-old history.

Newly formed Scarborough Athletic have been playing their football at Bridlington Stadium and fans are desperate to bring their team back to Scarborough.

Savile wiped from Scarborough…

Stories of the BBC presenter Jimmy Savile have come to light claiming he used to molest kids has shocked the people Scarborough.

After the programme ‘The Other Side of Jimmy Savile’ was aired, plans for a statue in Scarborough of the ex-presenter have now been scrapped and the council decided to take down a plaque located on Savile’s old home in Scarborough after it had been vandalised.

Savile used to live in and is now buried in Scarborough, and the people of the seaside town are said to be shocked by the news.

The headstone that resided on Savile’s grave was removed by his family as respect to the victims. A street in Scarborough that was named ‘Saviles Views’ after Savile has also been removed. All this has seen the ex-entertainer been wiped away from Scarborough and its history.

Speaking to Councillor Roxanne Murphy of the Scarborough Borough Council a week after the programme was shown on ITV, she said that the news is sad news for the town. “The people of Scarborough are sad of this news as he was a much-loved person.

“It is a sad revelation as he was seen to be a great person but we have to think of the people that he molested.”

The number of allegations against Savile has now topped 300. The allegations date back to 1960’s when he was the host of Top of the Pops. They now spread through the 1970’s where he worked for the BBC on his own programme ‘Jim’ll Fix It’ and through the 1980’s where he did most of his charity work.

His charity work has even been called up to question as allegations from when he did charity work at hospitals such as Stoke Mandeville.

As the allegations grow, so do the number of celebrities involved as stories of Gary Glitter and Freddie Starr molesting teenage girls in Savile changing room at the BBC have hit the headlines.

Speaking a week after the ITV programme on Savile was shown; Labour Councillor David L Belling of the Scarborough Borough Council refused to comment on the allegations on Savile but did say: “People should be wary of jumping on the band wagon.”
